(Warning: This story is a tad long. The publisher fired its editor in the name of timeliness.) Syddnys Story Syddny was born and raised in the protected community of Surefall Glade, north of the Hills of Qeynos. His mild-mannered parents, William and Clara, worked hard in the village, the community among the tall trees of the Jaggedpine Forest. Neither of them had ever been noticed or stood out in any way, but they were friendly to all and were generally well liked by the community. Syddny was their only child, for they were of modest means. They feared for his welfare, protecting him from the evils of the outside world. Sydd naively grew to believe that the world of the Jaggedpine represented the world as a whole. The value of the Balance of Nature, the signs of Tunares creations, the language of fawn and fauna, these were the natural and intuitive lessons Syddny learned. Powerful Rangers and Druids lived and traveled through his world, mostly human. Occasionally, there were strange travelers, but none that he would ever consider talking to. Sydd spent his little free time fishing and swimming in the streams and pond of Surefall, earning small change for the fish he sold. Unbeknownst to him or his parents, Syddny had grown to be a relatively strong young man with quick instincts. The Druidic Council of Surefall had taken note. They were interested in increasing their ranks to fend off the massive invasion of Gnolls from Blackburrow, growing daily. Syddny was quick with his druidic studies, but rather slow to grasp the arts of combat. Jeffersin was a childhood friend of Syddnys. Being half-elf, Jeffersin had been training as a Ranger for some time. He was quick to volunteer as Syddnys protector. Together, they entered the vile world of the Qeynos Hills. Such atrocities, vulgarities, and violence against nature, Syddny saw for the first time. And it wasnt just the Gnolls, but even the famed city of Qeynos smelled badly and was filled with angry people. The bats, rats, and snakes that came to feast upon Qeynos garbage were being slaughtered as vermin. Syddny was challenged to consider on which side to stand. Surely, Tunare never meant either of these creations to behave in this manner. Civilization had created gross abominations; all part of this world of Norrath that Syddny was to find as his own. As the battle with the Gnolls continued to rage, Syddny became interested in entering the Inner Circle of the Surefall Druids. His test of manhood came in his eighth season; he was to deliver a live Yellow-finned Goldeye fish. The Yellow-finned Goldeye is known only to exist in the subterranean lakes of Blackburrow, or so he was told. Syddny devised a plan to sneak into the heart of Blackburrow, clear an area of beach and fish carefully for the Goldeye. Upon completing the effort, he was on his way to return to Surefall when an infamous train of Gnolls nearly swallowed him whole. Many attempts later, as he entered his ninth season, he succeeded with the quest and was officially inducted as a member of the First Inner Circle. During his battles, Syddny often found gems of various sizes and colors. His interest led him to jewelers in Qeynos who began his training to make his own. The hobby was expensive and his friends recommended he find something more profitable, but from his first creation, Sydd always found the jewelry to be so pretty. He would never consider dropping the hobby, even when metals became prohibitively costly. Over time, with the aid of Jeffersin and others, Blackburrow became significantly more controlled. As a member of the Second Inner Circle, Sydd was given knowledge of spells that allowed increased travel. The Council asked him to travel the perimeter of the land, through Highpass to Freeport and south and back, taking Tunares word and action throughout her land. It was while exploring the land called Oasis that Syddny first met Kadanie. A wood elf ranger, she accepted Sydd when others were looking for more particular skills in people. Sydd had only heard of wood elves in travelers tales. And Kadanie was more than just any wood elf. Syddny was immediately taken by her, only to discover another, a monk, named Korlax, had already claimed her heart. Even so, Kadanie and Syddny spent many hours hunting together and sharing life experiences. Kadanie became Sydds bestest friend. A couple of days before her marriage to Korlax, Kadanie stopped Syddny in his tracks. She had a question for him; she wanted to know if he would consider joining her female guild, the Maidens of Norrath. He had heard the stories of its formation. He knew its members came primarily from Faydwer and few were aware of Western Antonica, let alone this solitary druid of modest means. She explained that he would be given the position of Sergeant of Arms, Protector and Guardian of the Maidens of Norrath. It would be a role that he was accustomed to fulfilling. He would no longer need to be such a loner in the world. The weight of the question, itself, made a profound impact upon the man. No longer a child, he had entered the Third Inner Circle and was carrying Tunares work to the reaches of the land. Did he belong in a group? Could he uphold his ideals? What would be the choices for his life? He agreed to consider it further. Then, as Syddny found his way to Felwithe, he chanced upon the name of the guild leader, Mojio. He called out to her, and she came to meet him. He was stunned to see her run around the corner. Beautiful both physically and her attire, she was a human, certainly not what he expected. They chatted about the prospects of joining the guild when suddenly an idea came out of nowhere. A surprise Wedding Shower was to be held that night for Kadanie. Mojio suggested that Syddny come as the dancer. Without his realization, Syddny was being tested for membership. He awkwardly agreed, willing to do anything for Kadanie. That evening, he met many of the Guild and found great pleasure in the warmth and light-natured elves and others of the Guild. His clumsy performance failed to dim the excitement and fun of the party. He agreed to join, if Mojio would have him. The next day, Syddny was further honored by being asked by Kadanie to be the one who gave away the bride. Nervously, at the appropriate time, Syddny said the words to forever seal away his unrealized dreams. He was truly happy for the couple, and wished them well. But their marriage had also brought him to a new family. As time passed, he became more acquainted with many of the members of the Maidens. A majority was druid and shared many of the same values. Others, like Adany (a barbarian raised as a gnome), Tybia, and Amends, have pulled Syddny into their efforts and guided his development. Bit by bit, each day, Syddny begins to realize how much more he can do.

Lytra Elandsar
Lytra Elandsar was the only daughter of Lady Wyndwhypser and Lord Erythmithril Landsar. As the daughter of two of Felwithe's most prosperous nobles, she had a loving childhood and could have wanted for nothing, except to perfect her art. Trained from a young age, she was trying to master the mystic arts since her arrival at Felwithe's Magic Academy.
Lytra traveled the lands, seeking new and inventive ways to use her magic for good means. During her travels, she met Irien, a dwarven paladin who stole her heart, while striving to rid High Keep forever of the dark goblins which plague the residents there. They married on top of the city gates of Kaladim, their union being blessed by Brell himself. Their marriage was also a keystone alliance for several factions in Felwithe and Kaladim as well as uniting the clans of the Longbeards and the Maidens of Norrath.
It was during the unfortunate experiments of Al'Kabor, that Euridite wizard, that Lytra befell misfortune. She was also attempting to tap into the same mystical energies that Al'Kabor tapped into when suddenly it was unleashed. The mystical backlash was too much for her to bear.
Fortunately, the Gods were merciful. Although they could not allow her to live as she was, they placed her 'self-soul' into an empty vessel which was born in Felwithe. Her body healed in time, and although the adult body 'knows' who she is, she is not the same, nor ever shall be the same again. The new body was named Lyytra, and the 'soul-self' retains all knowledge of that which has passed before. She is the true self and, therefore, the true wife of Irien Elandsar, and mother of Lytrarien (although the two are the same age).
Her travels now are arduous, as she strives to prove herself to her guildmates, her husband, all those who knew her, and herself. She wants to become the woman she was... and prays for that day to happen soon.
Maddyy
Maddyy was born to Kalatar and Idiora Stormweaver in the halfling town of Rivervale. Kalatar is a Rivervale Deputy and Idiora runs a bakery kiosk, her specialty being jumjum pies. Maddyy had a very happy childhood, fishing and swimming in the lake, walking through Misty Thicket with her Grandmother Rostana and her Grandfather Mortinel. She loved spending time in front of Fools Gold, listening to the many travelers that stopped through Rivervale. She heard stories about wondrous places with fairies and scary creatures. Maddyy's father taught her the way of the warrior, so the mace that a friendly traveler had bestowed upon her would be as powerful as the spells her mother taught her. Her mother taught her the ways of Karana, the Rainkeeper, and how the power of storms could be called for when in need. However, Maddyy was a very trusting girl, and was kidnapped by Lothwara the Enchantress at 15. This enchanter held Maddyy mesmerized as her daughter for five years and taught her some rudimentary jewel trade skills. They mostly lived on the island of Faydwer, deep in Greater Faydark. However they would often travel to the outlying areas. Maddyy was never mistreated but she would dream of shadowy figures in Rivervale, reaching out to her. Meanwhile, Maddyy's parents had begun a search of Norrath for their only daughter, and hired the Half-Elf Rogue Absynth to help find her, as he was resourceful and able to take on the shape of a Dark Elf, allowing him passage to the dark underworlds. Through Absynth's cunning he was able to find her during one of their trips to Butcherblock, and bring her home to Kalatar and Idiora. Lothwara followed them and was killed by an Orc Legionnaire in her haste to retrieve Maddyy. However, there is another twist in the tale. Absynth and Maddyy fell in love and planned to be married. Unfortunately on their wedding day, before their vows could be expressed, the enchantress' brother, Figarton, a powerful wizard, found them and cursed them with wandering spirits, never to travel together. Because their thirst for travel is so strong and the magical magnetic force that keeps them apart, they can never say in one place long, often arriving in a place that the other had just left, cursed to search for each other. What crushes them most deeply is that when the urge to move on becomes most powerful, they know it is because they are not that far apart. But black magic does have its twin. Dwizana, an old-Druid halfling, living deep in the cold mountains of Halas, heard of their plight. While she couldnt break the spell, she was able to help by calling upon Karanas help. She made it so that Absynth and Maddyy could speak to each other in their dreams. On one of Maddyy's travels to visit her parents she saw a woman named Tybia who belonged to the Maidens of Norrath, and questioned her about the guild. This would be another great turning point in her life, where another enchanter would became an important part. Mojio, the leader, inducted her into the Maidens, allowing Maddyy to have family all over Norrath as she is drawn from place to place. While fighting in Crushbone she met one of her best friends, Termini, a lovely Druid Wood Elf. You will often see them adventuring together. Maddyy's engagement ring brings her much pleasure, and you will often see her adjusting her ring, twirling it around, always hoping to be reunited. They have been able to get letters back and forth, often tattered as they pass through many hands. Maddyy still practices her jewel trade, still inexplicably drawn to the craft, a vestige of her time with Lothwara the Enchantress. Should you see Absynth, fellow Maidens, be sure to extend Maddyys love and her undying faith that they will someday be reunited.

Jataka's Dream
In my dreams, many lives I have lived. I am now a priestess in the fancy of my dreaming. Here is the story of my dreaming as I recall through the haze of sleep.
As a babe my only memories are of being held aloft in my fathers strong arms, his adoring gaze upon me. I also remember my mother's gentle singing, her radiance and love.
But these are only fleeting images that drift through my slumber. I know there was a pawn of evil and a pain in my side. It was then that the fever took hold and darkness descended. Dark shapes moved and the ground heaved. Stark shreiking and terror stalking. Shadows flicked past, blackness replaced light.
And then it was that I felt a spirit. The spirit sang to me and took the pain from my side. It comforted my soul and nutured by body. I ran in her glades, I followed her streams, found the pathes and the means to a place beyond the nightmare.
But as I grew, in my early teens, I became aware of the pain in others around me. The presence of the pawns of evil was not far away. And as Tunare had healed me and nutured me at her breast, I learned to heal and succor those in pain. I reached out and my soul touched theirs and with mother Tunare's teachings I salved the wounds. Then I turned and struck out at evil, which by now I understood to be Orcs, serving a dark master, Crushbone.
At this time a fair maiden I found by my side. Together we strove against evil. She would cut the disease from the wound, while I would set that wound back to healing. Other maidens also came to us and together we worked against Crushbone, his legions. Before long the wounds were cleansed and we moved against other great evils. Spirits unresting, undead.
With Tunares power flowing through me, the blade of my angel beside me and the compassion of our friends, i was blind to the seeds of deceit among us.
I do not wish to remember the night of my dream again, only that my angel was wounded too deeply. Our companions betrayed us. And I lost her, my angel.
So I fled from this place, not far from the doorstep of my home, to a land inhospitable and desolate. It was here that the barreness of my soul was matched by the dreamscape surrounding me. And it is here that I have begun, within this slumber, this life dream of many life dreams, to renew my spirit and reach out once more to the teachings of the spirit of Tunare.
It was the lullaby of one of my sisters that first called me, and a voice of welcome drifting across the landscape. And so I find myself dreaming among my sisters, the Maidens of this dreamland called Norrath.
It is to you my sisters that I make this call, although within the deepest of dreams, it is difficult to make ones voice heard any more. To you my sisters to hold my hand within this night and lead me back to the light. To you my sisters to come together once more, if you dare to dream at all.
More to come! |
